Innovative Pumping Projects

Ian Howe has provided many innovative solutions to complex and diverse concrete pumping projects New Zealand wide

Great Barrier Island

Pumping a 300 lineal metre driveway from a barge to meet up with the main road.  Our line pump was situated on the barge, with a site mixer, compressor (to clear the static pipeline), digger, along with the raw concrete materials. The digger loaded the materials into the site mixer, which in turn discharged into our line pump. Due to the pump distance and quantity this pour was done over two days. A job well done by the local Great Barrier Island contractors and Ian Howe team.

Mairangi Bay Sewage Outlet

Located 1km off Mairangi Bay the logistics of this pour included barge, concrete pump, divers and a helicopter.  Our boom pump was situated on a barge for the duration of the project, we reached down 20 metres to the seabed where specialised scuba divers placed concrete to the required area. A heavy lift helicopter with a concrete skip was used to transport the concrete to the pump on the barge.

Upper Nihotupu Dam

Our line pump was situated at the top of the dam pumping down the dam face to pour pressure relief valves at the bottom.  Concrete trucks delivered concrete to the carpark on Piha Rd, the concrete was transferred into 2 smaller trucks with 3m³ bowls, these trucks then travelled the 3.5km down a narrow bush road to discharge into our pump.

Commercial Bay

Located in downtown Auckland City and taking up an entire city block, the Commercial Bay Project links up with CRL Britomart. We were called in to complete pumping from the bottom basement B3 to Level 7. The difficulty on this busy multi-level site was access as we only had 2 small access points, loading bays on either side of the site.  From these loading bays we serviced the site using boom pumps and running static line, we poured floors, walls, tray decks, nibs, footpaths, tunnel roof and everything in between.

Wellington Waterfront Kina

These decorative Kina can be found on the Wellington waterfront.  The Kina were made in an Auckland factory, Ian Howe Concrete pumps were used to fill the Kina with a light-weight concrete.  Once filled and painted the Kina were transported to their current location on the Wellington waterfront.

Rakino Island

Our line pump and concrete trucks were loaded onto a barge each morning, travelling from downtown Auckland to Rakino Island, a trip of approximately 2 hours.  We had a floating static line of 80 lineal metres, from the barge to the beach, then a further static line of 80 lineal metres across the beach up a cliff to the job site. A good technical understanding of concrete was required to control concrete set times, as the last concrete truck could be up to 5 hours old, prior to going through the concrete pump.

Waikato Water Treatment Plant

This was the follow-on project from the Pukekohe East Reservoir project. Our 38m boom pumped full reach to a static delivery line running along a temporary gantry to our 18m Spider boom located on a barge, delivering concrete to tremie piles in the Waikato River.

Rose Gardens, Albany

Rose Gardens is multi-level, multi-building apartments.  To gain access to the rooftops our 18m placing boom was located on the top floor, moving up each floor with the building. Our boom pumps of varying size and leg configurations fed concrete to the placing boom.  We poured In Situ walls and floor pours using this method, a winning formula that was repeated around building sites Auckland wide.
